Varieties of Bhangra Dancing Style
Each group of performers adds something unique to their shows making their Bhangra dance unique. However, there are three ‘official’ varieties of this style that everyone uses as a base for their creative expressions:
- Traditional Bhangra.
This is the original folk dance of Mhaja (area in the Punjab region). It’s a seasonal dance practiced during the month leading to the Vaisakhi festival. During this time, the people of the region harvest crops. At the time of the festival, people celebrate with local fairs. This is where Bhangra is performed. Traditionally, this is a dance of men only.
These traditional Bhangra celebrations of harvest are practiced even today in some regions if India and Pakistan
Free form traditional Bhangra.
With the creation of Pakistan in 1947, majority of the regions that traditionally practiced Bhangra ‘moved’ to the newly formed country. Peoples who were relocated to Punjab region of India preserved this tradition and created the style known as free form Bhangra that combines original dance with some elements of Punjabi folk dances. It gained popularity fast and Punjabi emigrants spread this fantastic dance all over the world.
- Modern Bhangra.
This form of dancing evolved from free form in the 1990s due to the widespread emigration of the Punjabi people. It incorporated many Western dancing elements and turned Bhangra into the show that we know and love today.
